Nissan made the decision to grow into wider markets in the early 1950s. The company realised that the Datsun small car line could help fill a market gap in both Australia and the United States. Nissan displayed vehicles at the Los Angeles auto show in 1959, and received positive feedback. In 1959, the company founded Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A., a subsidiary based in the United States. Nissan continued to develop their lines, with the Datsun Fairlady, Datsun 510, and Datsun 240Z seeing significant changes in both drivability and styling. Nissan had been one of the world’s largest car exporters by the early 1970s.The Nissan Motor Company was established under a different moniker. Dat Motorcar Co. was established in 1914 and was originally known as Dat Motorcar Co. Dat was created as an acronym for the company’s partners at the time. The original partners were Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi, hence the name DAT Motorcar Co. The name of the company was changed to Kwaishinsha Motorcar Co. in 1918, and then back to Dat Motorcar Co. in 1925. In 1926, Dat Motorcar Co., based in Tokyo, merged with Jitsuyo Jidosha Co. Ltd to form Dat Automobile Manufacturing Co. Ltd. When Dat Motorcar Co. released their first smaller vehicle in 1931, it was the first time the name Datson was used. Before Nissan took ownership of DAT Motorcar Co in 1934, the name Datson (which means “son of DAT”) was used. After that, Nissan changed the name from Datson to Datsun because the word son in their language also meant loss.
